About Our Choirs

Island Choral Experience supports three separate choirs:  Island Prep Choir, Island Girls Choir and Island Sound.

IslandPrepChoirLogoThe Prep Choir is an open admission choir, with registration taking place in the spring for the following school year. The program follows the school calendar, rehearsing on Thursdays from 5:00-6:15pm.   The choir is designed to train young voices with the basic fundamentals of proper singing. A typical rehearsal includes a combination of the following: vocal warm ups, voice building, learning to breathe properly, ear training, singing in two parts, and dance. The children learn and sing classical songs from the choral repertoire and movement to accompany contemporary songs. The Prep Choir performs during the two major concerts of the Island Girls Choir. The girls are provided costumes and props for many of our shows. Participation in the Prep Choir provides an excellent musical foundation in a unique and fun atmosphere, although it does not guarantee admission to the Girls Choir.

Island Girls Choir Logo The Island Girls Choir has been in existence since 1976. Today, the Choir is known as a quality musical group with a broad repertoire and is comprised of 90 girls in the 4th through 6th grades. Members are selected by audition and rehearse Mondays and Thursdays 6:30 to 8:00pm weekly during the school year. Fulfilling the goal of combining music education and expertise with the fun of a shared experience, the Choir performs a wide spectrum of selections. These range from 16th Century to contemporary music, and encompass classical, sacred, ethnic, and Broadway tunes. Choreography also pays an important part in the two major performances during the year, as many of the numbers are done in a show choir style with colorful costumes and clever props. Auditions for the Island Girls Choir are held in the spring for the following school year.

IslandSoundplainlogoIsland Sound is a performing company which provides the opportunity for girls in grades 7 through 12 to improve vocal, movement and drama skills in a supportive environment. Rehearsing once a week on Mondays from 4:00 to 6:30 pm during the school year, plus one 4-hour rehearsal/retreat per month, these young performers are expected to work individually and as a supportive member of a company. This quality group performs musicals combining the talents of some of the world’s best known creators as well as original works. The girls learn a variety of styles of songs and dances while developing self-discipline, increasing poise and self-confidence and establishing personal goals. With costumes and props supplied from our huge inventory, the shows are elaborate and sophisticated. Many graduate to pursue careers in the arts. Members are selected by audition.
